Frequently Asked Questions about RCM Theory Exams

What age can I start learning theory?

It is recommended that students have a solid understanding of fractions before learning Theory 5.  This is usually around 9 or 10 years old.  A student who is "ready" to learn theory can learn very quickly; younger students may struggle with the new topics taught each week, so it's best to start when the student is ready.  Individual assessments and evaluation exams will be given to make sure an appropriate and customized Theory Plan is prepared to guide each student's music journey.

What should I do if I've never taken theory but now I need my Cello 10 Certificate?

Please contact me ASAP and I will help you create a customized Theory Plan so that you can achieve your goal in the shortest time possible.

Can I take the theory exam levels before my piano/violin/voice/etc. levels?

Yes, you can complete theory co-requisites before or within 5 years of the practical exam.

For example, if you take your Violin 10 exam in August 2019, then you must complete all the required theory courses by August 2024.

Can I skip theory courses?

While you still must learn all the material for Theory 5, 6, & 7, the exam for these levels is not required.  The mandatory theory courses to complete for your Piano 10 Certificate include:  Theory 8, Harmony 9, Harmony 10, History 9, & History 10.  All five (5) of these exams must be written in order to receive your practical Piano 10 RCM Certificate; if the theory exams are not completed then you will not receive your Piano 10 certificate.

What is the average mark for RCM Theory exams?

Please see this link to national averages for RCM Theory & Practical exams.  For my students, I expect a score of at least 80% or higher, indicating a sufficient understanding and thorough comprehension of the topic.

How do I obtain the BC High School Credits for my exams with RCM?

Please see this link to high school credits that shows which fine arts credits you will receive for completing your RCM Theory & Practical exams from Level 6 to 10.  These extra credits will show up on your BC Ministry of Education transcript and can be added by your school counsellor; s/he will need to see the original copies of your RCM results and certificates to add the credits.
